Companies Now Taxed Based On High Income Earners For Affordable Housing
Seattle voters have approved a new tax that targets companies paying employees over $1 million, generating an estimated $50 million annually to fund affordable housing for residents. This measure, lead by initiatives like the House Our Neighbors campaign, aims to help retain essential workers such as teachers and tradespeople by supporting Seattleās Social Housing Developerāa body created in 2023 now led by CEO Roberto JimĆ©nezāto acquire and renovate properties or build new units for those earning under $100,000 a year. Final Stage of Waterfront Revitalization Begins

The final phase of Seattle's waterfront revitalization is underway with the start of the Bell Street Improvements project, which aims to enhance connectivity between the Belltown neighborhood and the waterfront along the 1st Avenue ā Elliott Avenue corridor. The project, costing $5.2 million, will add a two-way protected lane, remove one travel lane, and widen sidewalks to promote safer, more accessible routes for pedestrians and cyclists. Mayor Bruce Harrell emphasized the benefits for local businesses and community safety, marking another step toward realizing the city's vision for a vibrant downtown waterfront. This project is part of a larger $806 million Waterfront Park initiative, funded through a mix of public and private investments, including an annual assessment from property owners within the district, and is expected to be completed by early summer despite previous delays due to the pandemic and a concrete supply strike.
