King County Council Seat Down to 3 Candidates
King County Executive Dow Constantine has nominated three candidates to fill the District 5 seat on the Metropolitan King County Council, vacated by Dave Upthegrove, who became state lands commissioner. As reported by the Seattle Times, The nominees include Karen Keiser, a retired state senator from Des Moines; Julia Patterson, a former County Council member and state legislator from SeaTac; and De’Sean Quinn, a Tukwila City Council member and King County Metro assistant general manager. The County Council will interview the candidates and choose one to serve until November's election, when voters will select a permanent representative. The council has 60 days from the vacancy on January 15 to make the appointment.
Locally Run Ferries Boost Ridership

A Washington State Ferry. Source: Wikipedia
Puget Sound's marine highways and walkways saw a modest ridership boost in 2024, with 20.8 million trips on Washington State Ferries (WSF), Kitsap Transit, and the King County Water Taxi—a 3% increase from 2023. Kitsap Transit led growth with a 12% rise, driven by its fast ferry routes and additional sailings funded by WSF to compensate for reduced service. WSF, facing vessel shortages and maintenance challenges, increased ridership by 2.6% but remained below pre-pandemic levels. Walk-on passengers saw a 6% uptick, fueled by tourism and office returns, while routes like Point Defiance-Tahlequah recorded notable gains. The King County Water Taxi also experienced significant growth, especially on its Seattle-Vashon run, thanks to state-funded additional sailings. (Source)
As a sidenote, if you’ve never gone on the ferries, I would highly encourage a day trip to the Kitsap peninsula, the views from the ferry ride alone are worth it!
