Bill for Safer Weapons for Police Advances
The Seattle City Council committee approved a bill allowing the limited use of “less lethal” weapons, such as blast balls, by the Seattle Police Department to manage protests, while adding stricter regulations on their deployment. The decision marks a shift from previous councils that sought to nearly ban these weapons following the controversial police response to 2020 demonstrations. The vote, which passed 3-1 with one abstention, moves the bill to the full council for consideration on February 4. While the legislation aims to establish clear guidelines for using these weapons and address federal oversight requirements, it has drawn criticism from protesters and advocacy groups, who view such tools as oppressive.
Blast balls, unused since October 2020, will now require a declared civil emergency for deployment but not specific mayoral approval, as proposed by Council member Cathy Moore. Advocates of the bill argue that flexibility is necessary to manage violent situations, while opponents warn of potential harm and lack of accountability for neighboring jurisdictions assisting Seattle police. New Pickleball Courts in Fremont

Theo Chocolate in Fremont. Source: The Eater Seattle
As reported by the Seattle Times, Seattle’s pickleball scene is set to expand with a new 26,500-square-foot indoor facility in Fremont, backed by The Picklr, a Utah-based company co-owned by former NFL quarterback Drew Brees. The facility will be located at the former Theo Chocolate warehouse at 124 N. 35th St., adding to The Picklr’s growing network of 19 U.S. clubs, with plans for hundreds more. Picklr offers memberships with unlimited play, court reservations, and nationwide access, and has 10 additional Washington locations planned. Local competition is heating up, with clubs like Picklewood Courts and Kitchen, Pickleball Kingdom, and Side Out Pickleball Centers also expanding.
