King County to Invest $107M Expanding Green Spaces

King County has approved $107 million in funding for 53 conservation projects aimed at expanding green spaces, restoring habitats, and increasing farmland accessibility as part of its climate resilience efforts. The funding comes from two voter-approved levies—the Conservation Futures Fund and the King County Parks Levy—which are projected to generate a combined $1.08 billion by 2031. The Conservation Futures levy, funded through property taxes, will contribute $129 million in 2025, while the Parks Levy is expected to bring in $810 million over six years. King County Executive Dow Constantine emphasized the initiative’s role in protecting natural areas, enhancing wildlife habitats, and preserving historic sites, reinforcing the county’s commitment to sustainability and environmental conservation. $134 Million for 1600 Housing Units

Seattle and King County are investing a combined $134 million to build 1,600 affordable housing units to address the region's housing crisis. Seattle will allocate $108 million from its voter-approved Housing Levy, expected to generate $970 million by 2030, to create 655 affordable homes. Meanwhile, King County is directing $26 million through its Housing Finance Program to fund nine projects, resulting in 848 new homes, 66 renovated rental units, and 25 homeownership opportunities over five years. Mayor Bruce Harrell emphasized the importance of leveraging public funds to create long-term housing solutions. With only 23 affordable units available per 100 low-income households, and nearly 200,000 additional units needed by 2044, these efforts aim to increase housing capacity and accessibility across the region.
