Bill to Secure Backup Funding For Ferries Faces Headwinds
Washington state Rep. Michelle Caldier has proposed House Bill 1377 as a contingency plan in case bids for hybrid-electric ferries, expected this April, fail to materialize. The bill would allow the governor to declare an emergency and expedite the process of getting at least two diesel-powered ferries within two years to address ongoing ferry service disruptions, which resulted in over 3,000 canceled sailings in 2023. Caldier argues that while hybrid-electric ferries remain the long-term goal, diesel ferries would provide immediate relief for residents who rely on ferries for daily transportation. However, the bill faces strong opposition, with House Transportation Committee Chair Jake Fey declining to grant it a hearing, making its passage unlikely. (Source)

Galleries Try to Attract More Crowds With Meditation and Owls

Last fall, Go Natives! Nursery â founded by local ornithologist and botanist Don Norman Source: Tanya Miller / Seattle Art + Culture Week
Seattle's art galleries are redefining the traditional gallery experience by incorporating interactive events like live music, tattoo sessions, meditation, and even dog competitions to attract new and younger audiences. Venues such as J. Rinehart Gallery, AMcE Creative Arts, and Foster/White Gallery are blending fine art with unique experiencesâwhether itâs an owl meet-and-greet, a bluegrass concert, or live tattooingâto create a more welcoming atmosphere. While these events donât always drive immediate sales, they foster community engagement and introduce more people to the art world. As Seattleâs downtown evolves and prepares for major events like the 2026 FIFA World Cup, these galleries see an opportunity to further integrate into the city's cultural landscape, ensuring that art remains both relevant and accessible.
