Salmon Effort Reprioritizes Projects to Efficiently Use Funds

Western Washington tribes and state officials have entered mediation over removing salmon migration barriers, a longstanding issue connected to tribal treaty fishing rights and habitat damage from highway construction. The Washington State Department of Transportation’s fish passage program has faced soaring costs and missed deadlines, prompting scrutiny from tribal leaders and legislators about the program’s effectiveness. With billions already allocated—and more potentially needed—there are calls to focus on projects that yield the greatest habitat restoration benefits. While the 2013 court order requires the state to fix most fish-blocking culverts by 2030, that timetable may be revised during mediation. Both sides aim to balance financial realities with obligations to restore salmon habitat, and there are discussions about re-prioritizing projects to ensure more efficient use of state funds. James Beard Award Nominee Set To Open New Restaurant

Chef Oscar Amador, a James Beard Award-nominated culinary talent from Barcelona, will open a new restaurant called La Loba this spring in Seattle’s soon-to-be-completed 1 Hotel. Amador brings experience from Michelin-starred Spanish kitchens—including El Bulli and El Raco de Can Fabes—and Las Vegas, where he led EDO Tapas. In the U.S., he has been recognized as a James Beard finalist for Best Chef: Southwest and a semifinalist for Outstanding Chef. At La Loba, Amador plans to merge Spanish culinary traditions with Pacific Northwest ingredients, featuring dishes like mushroom al ajillo and octopus al olivo. Located at 2125 Terry Avenue in the Denny Triangle/South Lake Union area, La Loba is set to launch dinner service first, followed by brunch, though an exact opening date has not been announced.
